Immigrant Visa Interview Canceled? Here’s What We Know About Rescheduling

Updated September 2026

Were you one of the thousands of people whose immigrant visa interview was suddenly canceled in August or September?

You are not alone. Families around the world have been affected by canceled and postponed immigrant visa interviews, and unfortunately, there is still a lot we don’t know about when all of these appointments will be rescheduled.

Here is what we know so far and what you can do if your interview was affected.

The 75-Country Immigrant Visa Pause Is No Longer in Effect

Earlier this year, the Department of State paused immigrant visa issuance for nationals of 75 countries.

A federal court struck down that policy in August. The State Department subsequently confirmed that, as of August 21, 2026, the 75-country immigrant visa issuance pause is no longer in effect.

That was an important development, but it did not mean immigrant visa processing immediately returned to normal.

Why Were Immigrant Visa Interviews Canceled?

Around the same time the 75-country policy ended, immigrant visa interviews began being canceled or postponed at U.S. Embassies and Consulates around the world.

The State Department temporarily adjusted immigrant visa appointments while consular officers underwent additional training related to public charge screening and immigrant visa processing.

This was a separate issue from the 75-country pause and affected immigrant visa processing more broadly.

For families who had already waited months, or even years, to reach the interview stage, receiving a cancellation with little information about when the appointment would be rescheduled was understandably devastating.

When Will Canceled Immigrant Visa Interviews Be Rescheduled?

Unfortunately, we still don’t have a clear answer.

We have seen immigrant visa processing begin to resume in some locations, and many October appointments appear to remain scheduled.

However, as of late September 2026, we have not seen widespread rescheduling of all the immigrant visa interviews that were canceled in August and September.

This means experiences may vary significantly depending on the U.S. Embassy or Consulate handling the case.

What Should You Do If Your Interview Was Canceled?

If your immigrant visa interview was canceled or postponed, there are several steps you can take.

1. Contact the U.S. Embassy or Consulate handling your case.

Ask when your immigrant visa interview will be rescheduled and whether you need to take any action. This is what we have been doing for our affected clients.

2. Continue monitoring your email and Embassy instructions.

Watch carefully for communications about rescheduling or requests for updated documents. Make sure the Embassy or Consulate has accurate contact information for you.

3. Consider contacting your congressional representative.

If your case has been significantly delayed, you may consider asking your U.S. representative or senator’s office for assistance with a federal agency.

A congressional office cannot force the State Department to schedule an interview or approve a visa, but it may be able to request information about the status of your case.

We Will Continue Monitoring These Changes

Immigrant visa processing has changed quickly over the past several months, and there are still unanswered questions about when all canceled interviews will be rescheduled.

We will continue monitoring developments and sharing updates as more information becomes available.
