When to schedule your medical exam? It depends on the type of case that you have.
Adjustment of Status
Adjustment of status is the process that happens inside of the United States. You file a petition that shows your relationship is real plus an application for your green card altogether. The interview happens here in the United States and the medical exam cannot be scheduled more than 60 days before you file.
Sometimes when you go to schedule your medical exam, you might have to wait. They might schedule it out for a few months because the civil surgeons are booked up. We usually have our clients wait until we’re very close or until we’ve already filed the application to have them get the medical exam.
We don’t want them to be in a position where they’ve obtained their medical exam but they have to get all of their other documents that take more than 60 days and the medical exam expires. For adjustment of status, it can’t be more than 60 days old at the time you file.
Make sure you’re really close and that you have everything. Have your documents ready before you schedule that medical exam.
Fiancé & Spouse Visas
For these types of cases, the medical exam cannot be scheduled until the US embassy or consulate tells you you’re allowed to do so. Typically, you aren’t able to schedule your medical exam until you have an interview date.
It’s a little bit more complex with fiancé visas in the sense that sometimes the US embassy or consulate will let you know it’s okay to take the next steps. Even though your interview isn’t scheduled yet, they would give you the green light to schedule your medical exam.
But in general, you can’t get your medical exam while your fiancé visa petition is pending. You have to wait for the US embassy or consulate to say you are now allowed to go ahead and get your medical exam.
