The civics test is a required part of the naturalization process, designed to evaluate knowledge of U.S. history and government. For years, applicants have studied from a bank of 100 questions, with the understanding that only 10 would be asked during the interview. To pass, answering 6 correctly has been enough. Starting on October 20, 2025, this will change. Applicants will now need to study from a pool of 128 questions, and during the interview, 20 will be asked. To pass, at least 12 answers must be correct. This shift means a larger study load and a higher threshold for passing.
What This Means for Applicants Before and After October 20, 2025
The date of filing is key. If an application is filed before October 20, 2025, the current test with 100 questions will still apply. Those who file after October 20 must prepare for the expanded test. For couples who are already eligible to apply, this timing may make an important difference. Filing earlier can allow applicants to face the shorter, simpler version of the exam, reducing the amount of preparation required.
How the Test Will Be Scored Going Forward
The current system allows applicants to finish the civics portion once they achieve 6 correct answers. After October 20, the format changes. The officer will ask up to 20 questions, and as soon as the applicant reaches 12 correct, the civics portion will be complete. If 9 wrong answers are reached before then, the test will be failed. While the structure is slightly different, the main change lies in the larger number of study questions.
For those filing after October 20, preparation becomes even more important. A bigger set of questions means more time is needed for study and review. Couples should begin early, practice often, and create a steady study plan to avoid last-minute stress. Consistency in reviewing the material can make the difference between passing and failing. Planning ahead ensures that this important step in the naturalization process is met with confidence.
Why Timing Your Application Matters
If you are ready and eligible to apply now, filing before October 20 may save you from the extra burden of studying the longer set of questions. For many couples, this could mean reaching citizenship faster and with less pressure. If waiting is necessary, being aware of the new requirements gives you the opportunity to prepare wisely and adjust expectations.
