What Is a Spouse Visa?
A spouse visa is the first step for many couples who want to live together in the United States. Through a process called consular processing, the U.S. citizen or permanent resident applies for their spouse. The couple must show that their marriage is real, meet income requirements, and attend an interview. Once approved, the spouse receives a visa in their passport.
When the spouse enters the United States with their visa, immigration stamps their passport. This stamp shows they are now a permanent resident. After paying the green card printing fee, the spouse will receive their green card in the mail. The spouse visa is simply the bridge that allows them to enter the U.S. and activate their permanent resident status.
What Is Permanent Resident Status?
Permanent resident status, often called a green card, allows a spouse to live permanently in the United States. With this card, they can work legally, apply for a driver’s license, and travel internationally. To keep this status, the spouse must continue to live in the United States. Knowing how the spouse visa and green card connect can help couples avoid unnecessary stress and prepare for the steps ahead. The process may seem long, but each part plays an important role in reuniting families and creating stability for the future.
Some people confuse the spouse visa with a tourist visa, thinking it is only temporary. In reality, the spouse visa is the necessary step that leads directly to permanent resident status. Without this visa, a spouse cannot obtain a green card from outside the country.
